Sports Murals

Sports murals tell our history, such as this one of Bobby Orr’s immortal leap in the final game of the Stanley Cup back in the day.  Bruins fans will never forget that moment when Orr’s goal won the 1970 Stanley Cup in sudden death overtime.  We can’t wait to see how the 2013 race will end!

Arteriors’ mural commemorating Orr’s flight was painted for the Canton Sportsplex.  It transformed an interior wall of cinder block into an exterior building with trompe l’oeil paintings of store windows and sports posters glued to the wall.

Baseball fans are also ever faithful in our undying love for our team.  True worshipers have them idolized on their walls, such as this sports mural honoring Ted Williams. Based on two black and white photographs, Arteriors merged the two images together and painted the image to appear like a sepia-toned photo. This sports mural is painted directly on the wall with wood molding installed around it as a frame.

Red Sox sports mural

In our third painted sports mural, Arteriors depicts Babe Ruth as a spectator standing by the score board watching the hockey game being played.

Painted Floors: Checkerboard Pattern with a Fresh Approach!

These painted floors are the perfect marriage of classic design and a fresh approach.

Our client in a suburb of Boston wanted to brighten up a foyer with a painted floor. The color combination of gray and white along with the harlequin diamond pattern avoids predictability with the crisp, unpainted oak border and dark gray ribbon on the edges.

Precision is the key to the clean look of checkerboard painted floors. The sight line from the front door is the petite hallway leading to the family room.  We carefully planned the pattern to fit exactly six diamonds lengthwise down the narrow hallway and into the front entry area.  And calculated that the width will be one perfect diamond. The tricky part was keeping the same size oak border for the rest of the foyer floor!

Painted Floor

Another variation of the checkerboard floor painting is this one done for our client’s pre-Revolution Colonial home in an historic New England village. We incorporated an Early American palette of ochre and eggplant with a primitive faux marble border to echo the house’s roots. Supporting generations of shod and unshod feet for more than 250 years, the floorboards are creaky and wavy. They are charming with a perfectly painted grid on top. Who wants to play checkers?

Kitchen Cabinet Painting with a Higher Degree of Detailing

Two kitchen cabinet painting projects recently completed required a higher degree of detailing. With Arteriors’ love and attention to details, both kitchens transcended their mediocre beginnings of run of the mill wood finishes.

The North of Boston suburban homeowners opted for a French Country look with an off-white, weathered paint finish.  Architectural details were accented with a light antique glaze on top and the island was painted in a contrasting color.

French Country Kitchen Cabinets

Our second client, a luxury condo owner in Boston, had us transform the kitchen cabinets into a fresh contemporary finish.  A solid application of cool gray/aqua was applied to the frame and box.  And a pearlescent combed strie finish was painted on the door panels.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting - before

Kitchen Cabinet Painting - after

The fun part of the job is of course the final accent details.  But the other 90% of the work is crucial to creating durable and beautiful cabinet finishes that will last the test of time. A paint finish is only as strong as its weakest link.

The steps for kitchen cabinet painting leading up to the final decorative layers go like this:

  1. Sand and degloss for good adhesion.
  2. Prime with high adhesion primer.
  3. Apply base coat of desired finish color with a premium paint that is designed for painting cabinets, such as low-VOC, low-odor Advance by Benjamin Moore.
  4. Apply 2nd coat of finish color.

There are no shortcuts to this work.  We are meticulous about producing the best substrate for the fun decorative layers.

The cabinets in both kitchens were good candidates for applying our transformative magic.  They were of high quality and their layout suited the homeowners’ needs. And of course, choosing to reuse is a brilliant way to conserve on resources, stay green and save a bundle of time and money!

Tiles Inspire Me

Stephanie MesnerThe Artist View by Stephanie Mesner

What is it about tile that is so appealing? The tactile pleasure of its cool surface or the slight variations in color that renders each one unique? Or is it the zen quality of pattern, both with the actual grid of the tile and in the imagery on the tile?

Tile is one of the finish materials that seems to have a magnetic force. Like fabric, I can’t get enough of it. You can find it on just about every surface, indoors or out, in Southern Spain which was where I was for 10 days this May.

Here’s what I discovered on my walks through Ronda, Sevilla and Malaga, Spain. This first picture is of an advertisement in an Art Nouveau style – for Anis del Mono (anisette of the monkey). I found it in the oldest tapas bar in Sevilla, El Rinconcillo.

In my next life I will design and produce gorgeous tile mosaics.  And in the meantime I’ll simply store the images to inspire and inform me on design and color.

Stencil Painting Creates a Custom Modern Wallpaper

From textile fragment to painted damask finish; Inspiration is everywhere!

Stencil Painting Inspiration

Stencil Painting Inspiration

A textile fragment from the 13th century sparked an idea to use the design as a large-scaled stencil painting to create a custom damask modern wallpaper.

This is how the vision became a reality…

In the summer of 2012, Arteriors painted another of one of our dream projects: a Maxfield Parrish inspired mural for a new luxury condo in an old Victorian in historic Back Bay, Boston.

The inspiration for the Parrish styled mural in our clients’ powder room was a fragment of an old landscape mural on the walls in the lobby of the building.  It was, unfortunately, too far damaged to repair and recreate. The contractor simply painted over the remains, thus creating a design vacuum. The lobby’s clean but bland first impression for this multi-million dollar condo building was not matching the luxury homes inside.

Stencil PaintingAnd so, a perfect design storm was brewing …  When we were asked to come up with ideas for the walls above the paneling, a painted damask pattern based on the brave little lion textile seemed like the perfect answer. Lucky for us the home-owners agreed.

How did this 4 foot image of a lion under a palm tree become the generously scaled damask pattern? Arteriors still uses old-school methods of gridding the original picture of the textile fragment. Then the design was transferred  to a cartoon drawing on a scaled grid that was approx. 40” high. The height of the wall and the dimensions of the upper and lower border had to be carefully considered first before determining the height of the main image.

The drawings were then traced onto mylar and the bridges for stenciling were added. We cut 4 stencils of both the lion/tree image, 2 of the leaf border and 2 more of the upside-down bird with a tree branch.

If there was more time available, we would have sent them off to be laser cut – a far easier route that saves fingers from blisters!

The Arteriors system of a custom damask finish is to first apply a metallic paint finish as the background.  Then the stencil pattern is painted over all in a complementary color with a flat sheen. We were able to spray paint the stencil pattern this time, which is not always an option, so the rest of the project went quickly.

Much like the original mural, this one-of-kind painted damask custom wallpaper creates a grand and welcoming entrance.

We can’t wait for our next custom damask project!  Keep your eyes open because INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE.  Send your ideas for stencil painting to arteriors@rcn.com and we will create your unique “modern wallpaper” look!

Design Ideas from Architectural Digest

The Best Part of the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, 2013

The most inspiring of the design ideas from the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, 2013 was the DIFFA’s Dining by Design vignettes by various designers and schools. DIFFA is in its 16th year and has once again harnessed the great talents in the interior design industry to create these imaginative, beautiful and sometimes thought provoking dining room set designs.  DIFFA’s mission is to provide direct care for people living with HIV/AIDS and preventive education for those at risk.

This idea by a group of design students packed a powerful message about the global aspect of AIDS. The image of continents is created from glass test tubes inserted into a grid which is back lit by tiny lights suggesting the despair of the disease and hope in finding a cure. Design ideas from Architectural Digest Home Show

Other design ideas for dining rooms were quirky and fun.  Some were evocative of a serene oasis of healing. This one is obviously from the quirky/fun category! By Benjamin Moore, everything is painted with a strong color and pattern.  It is testimony to how sometimes more is better.

Design Ideas from Benjamin Moore at Architectural Digest Home Show

As an artist, I firmly believe in the healing power of color. These gorgeous flower arrangements, paired with the black and white china demands celebration. I’m thinking champagne, fried chicken, smashed potatoes and red velvet birthday cake for dessert!

If you didn’t make it to the Architectural Digest Home Design Show 2013 make sure to go next year and be inspired by a great collection of innovative design ideas.

Metallic Paint Finish in Oxidized Copper for Huge Curb Appeal

A metallic paint finish in oxidized copper on the exterior of homes, restaurants or retail establishments adds huge curb appeal. All metallic finishes are luminous and reflective so they are natural attention grabbers.

CCopper Metallic Paint Finish

Copper Metallic Paint Finish

Each metallic paint has a certain flavor. Gold tastes like caviar.  Champagne and silver have a lyrical and poetic vibe. But copper has a savory appeal which makes it a perfect finish to use in the front of commercial and residential buildings.

Arteriors painted this set of mass-produced garage doors with a water-based, exterior grade copper metallic paint finish.  We also applied a trompe l’oeil stone painting surround to match the outer existing stone façade. Imagine the original appearance with the typical white garage doors.  Then compare that to these seemingly handcrafted copper-clad doors.  You have to admit – the curb appeal is off the charts!

Inspired Metallic Paint FinishMuch like painted kitchen cabinets, metallic paint finishes are extremely cost effective and save our clients bundles of money.

Arteriors added a few touches of painted copper verdigris and oxidized copper to the façade of a local favorite restaurant: Fiorella’s Italian Restaurant in Newton, MA. The Fiorella’s brand incorporates lots of antique copper pots and warm mellow colors.  So adding a copper metallic finish to the exterior further accents this design flavor and creates an appealing first impression.

Painting Ideas: Blue & White

Blue and White Designer Finishes: at the MFA Boston and in beautiful interiors around the globe!

Painting Ideas Soft Color Wash

Soft Color Wash

Searching for new painting ideas? Blue and white is classic, beautiful and has become a color palette Zeitgeist. No one knows where the fad began, but its popular appeal  is evident in objects from the ancient Egyptian and Chinese cultures.

The New Blue and White show at the MFA Boston has gathered together the artwork of contemporary artists that are creating new blue and white objects. Their work is thought provoking and extremely varied.  There is not one object displayed in the galleries that is not visually appealing.

Blue and white is like milk and Oreos: A luscious marriage of complimenting tastes!

Like so many before us, Arteriors taken the blue and white ball and ran with it. Our suggestions for painting ideas incorporating this classic combination includes raw silk finish, strie , basketweave and soft color wash.

Linen paint finish

Linen paint finish

Here’s my theory of why this color combination is so appealing. Blue and white is a reflection of the two life-giving elements we live by: air (sky) and water.

It’s hard wired into our DNA, this love of blue and white. Much like petting a dog or cat, gazing at this classic color combo probably lowers our heart rate and raises serotonin levels.  (Read more here about decorative plasters that create mood elevating negative ions).

Kitchen Cabinet Painting: Before & After

Kitchen Cabinet Painting Before and AfterThese before and after pictures of our client’s cabinets illustrate the transformative power of Arteriors’ kitchen cabinet painting.  Not to be overly dramatic, but this chic condo unit was brought from the darkness into the light once the walnut stained cabinets were treated to our careful prep, priming and painting.

This is a compact luxury condo, so every design element makes a visual statement. The “before” kitchen was looking heavy and cramped. The designer and homeowner made a wise decision to have us transform the wood finish into elegantly detailed cream colored cabinets.  This made the contrast between fixtures, granite countertop and paint finish complimentary and subtle.

To determine whether or not this cost-effective kitchen cabinet refinishing is the right way to go, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do you like the layout of the kitchen and does it suit your family’s needs?
  2. Are the cabinets of high quality and will they last another 10 years of use?
  3.  Do you have the budget for a $30,000 to $75,000 kitchen renovation lasting 3 to 5 months or would you prefer spending less than a quarter of those figures with the work time lasting 5 to 12 days?

Read more on the durability of Arteriors’ kitchen cabinet painting. The best high-end finishes for brand new kitchens are hand painted on location.  Our step-by-step process is also of the highest quality, using 100% water-based paints, such as Benjamin Moore Advance. Arteriors’ kitchen cabinet painting process is environmentally  friendly, extremely cost effective and yields fantastic results!

Non-Toxic Paint is the Best Choice for Interior Painting

Part 4 in our Toxicity of Paint Series

Non toxic paint could be the best choice for you and your family. If you have read the past 3 articles in our series about the health risks of using oil paint or low VOC paint, you’ll understand why.

Non toxic paint is easy to procure, it’s good for you and leaves only a small carbon footprint.

non toxic paint

Non toxic paints are water based paints that go beyond VOC-free paints. Health conscious painters and environmentalists have demanded greener choices and the paint industry has listened! We now have dozens of products to choose from that vary in the amount of natural contents and in the quality.

Some still have petroleum based acrylic ingredients, but have eliminated the inert toxins discussed in part 3 of this series. Others are more natural paints that you could just about substitute for lunch in a pinch! Made from raw ingredients like plant resins and oils, plant dyes, beeswax, minerals such as chalk, talcum and clay, milk casein, etc., they are non-polluting and protect the air, water and land even in their “after-life”.

In a perfect world we would use only non-toxic paints – but there are a few draw backs. They’re not as readily available as a gallon of Benjamin Moore, and some of them are pricey.

Arteriors has used Mythic Paint (available to us locally at Eco Home Center of New England).  It might not be as natural as others, but they have a full line of water-based paints in various sheens to choose from and they are reasonably priced. We are very happy with their results. BioShield Paint is another favorite of ours but we have not found a dealer in our area and have to order them a week in advance.

Also, stay tuned! Natural stone veneers such as decorative plasters and American Clay actually improve indoor air quality! Read our next article (coming soon) about these wonderful finishes in part 5 of our blog series.
